A dream-home wish list that begins with how you actually live

Beautiful rooms can offer inspiration, but they rarely show where the bags, laundry and unfinished projects go. Before imagining a completely different home, write a wish list based on activities. A useful space supports the people living in it, including their ordinary mess and changing needs.

Describe functions before buying objects

Start with requests such as somewhere to read, a clear place to prepare food or an easier way to leave the house. Then look at the space you already have. Moving a chair or clearing one shelf may test an idea without a purchase. Measure anything that must fit and consider movement, access and shared use before deciding that a photograph contains the right solution.

Try a reversible arrangement

Give a new layout a few days before investing in permanent changes. Ask everyone who uses the area what became easier and what got in the way. Keep safety and any rental restrictions in mind when considering alterations. A good result might be less visually dramatic than a makeover: perhaps everyone can find their keys, or one corner finally has room for an activity you enjoy.

Try this, one step at a time

  1. List the activities your home should support.
  2. Test one change with existing furniture.
  3. Ask other household members what works for them.
